Biogas is unique because it offers multiple benefits beyond renewable energy production:
- Decarbonising heat and transport
Biomethane is a direct substitute for natural gas, meaning it can reduce emissions in heating systems without the need for costly infrastructure changes. It can also fuel heavy goods vehicles as BioCNG, a crucial step in decarbonising hard-to-electrify sectors like freight. - Tackling waste challenges
The UK generates millions of tonnes of food and agricultural waste every year. Instead of going to landfill or incineration, AD plants can convert this waste into valuable resources, cutting methane emissions and supporting a circular economy. - Supporting Agriculture
Digestate, a by-product of AD, can replace synthetic fertilisers, reducing reliance on energy-intensive imports and closing the nutrient loop for farmers. - Delivering Energy Security
With a reliable feedstock base and localised production, biogas reduces exposure to volatile global gas markets, strengthening the UK’s energy independence.
Unlocking Biogas’s full potential
Despite these benefits, the UK has yet to fully embrace biogas at scale. Policy frameworks have been inconsistent, and the Green Gas Support Scheme has not delivered the expected growth in capacity. To realise biogas’s full role in Net Zero, there must be stronger alignment between agricultural, energy, and waste policies, alongside investment in infrastructure and carbon capture technologies.
Join the conversation – 2026 Biogas & Carbon Capture Seminar
These challenges and opportunities will take centre stage at the 2026 Biogas & Carbon Capture Seminar, hosted by Blended Products Ltd in January 2026. This unique event will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, and operators to discuss:
- The future policy and market landscape for biomethane.
- How AD plants can transform CO₂ from waste into revenue.
- Innovative business models for resilience in a subsidy-free future.
Delegates can attend for the day, opt for the full 24-Hour Delegate Package with networking dinner and overnight stay, or showcase their organisation as one of only 10 exclusive exhibitors.
