- Total acids: Upper limit of 100 ppm w/w Residue on evaporation: Upper limit of 50 ppm w/w

- Inhibits spoilage caused by microbes in food and beverages, extending the shelf life of products
- Is an antioxidant that prevents browning in food and beverages
- Used as a chemical intermediate in the production of sulphuric acid
- Used in fumigation.
- Used as a preservative in food and beverages
- Used as a bleaching agent.
